Settee, Chaise Longue, Sofa. Ceylon c.1825 Ebony, cane & upholstery.
This style of settee was derived from Thomas Sheraton’s design for a “Grecian Sopha, an example of which accompanied Sir Stamford Raffles to Batavia in 1811. Examples followed in a variety of local woods; the use of exotic Ebony (Diospyros spp) would suggest Colombo or Galle, Ceylon as a likely origin.
